Umut Gunduz – BA (Hons) Sound Arts and Design

Stevie G by Umut Gunduz

Umut Gunduz decided to study BA (Hons) Sound Arts and Design at London College of Communication after experimenting with sound in his home-built studio. He is currently directing a new series for Channel 4’s shorts online content.

What did you study at LCC and what year did you graduate?

BA Sound Art and Design. I think I graduated in 2008 (you may have to check with Chris Petter! - sorry).

What made you pick Sound Arts at LCC?

I had built my own home studio with the idea of making electronic music. One day, I managed to feedback my system (I had very little knowledge of signal flows and managed to pipe a reverb and delay back into themselves!!) and the sound was just incredible. The result was cacophonous! And, so began my 'art' path.

I spent some time researching music colleges and then stumbled across LCC. The course sounded so unique and interesting I couldn't resist the enigma.

Where are you from in the world?

A medley of experiences, mostly derivative of London.

What are your fondest memories of LCC?

The other students I studied with. They were all such a random bunch of genius, it really inspired me.

What are you working on at the moment?

Directing a new series for Channel 4 – part of their shorts online content for 4oD.

What excites you about Sound Arts?

The sculpting of sound. The ability to use use sound to trigger emotion, imagination, memories and questions!

Name three things you couldn't be creative without:

My childhood, my time and people.

If you could collaborate creatively with anybody in the world who would it be?

Steven Soderbergh.... argh! Too difficult to answer easily.

Tell us about your future plans and ambitions:

I would like to produce an exhibition of work at some point.  I am writing a short script and would like to do more fiction. My big goals are directing for an HBO series and directing a feature length fiction.

What drives you to succeed?

The possibility of the alternative...

What three words would you use to best describe LCC?

Opportunity, openness and encouragement.

What piece of advice would you give to new students?

Get your head down and keep producing work. If you are honest and open with your ideas the rest will take care of itself. Oh, and turn up on time for your lectures – it's important to grow up a little.

Where in London do you go when you need a little inspiration?

A very particular park bench in London Fields. It's where I have gone to sit and contemplate after every major incident in my life.
